David brings the best of mainstream “Western” medicine, mind-body practices, and the emerging field of spiritual psychology to his patients. His intention is to exemplify the original meanings of “doctor” and “physician.” The word “doctor” is derived from the ancient Greek for teacher, and the word “physician” has its roots in the art of healing and natural science. It has been said that David is a doctor who embodies the oft-repeated proverb: “Physician, heal thyself.”
After graduating with honors from Pennsylvania State University and Jefferson Medical College, David started his career in Emergency Medicine as Medical Director of a major trauma center. He was a Clinical Professor in the Department of Family Practice at Southern Illinois University Medical School and also National Faculty in Advanced Cardiac Life Support at the American Heart Association in Dallas, Texas. Board certified in Emergency Medicine, he also served on the Board of Directors and as President of the Illinois Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians.
After re-locating to Vail, Colorado, and receiving additional board certification in Sports Medicine, he served as Medical Director of Vail Valley Medical Center and President of the county medical society. David practiced Emergency Medicine for over 22 years, helping over 120,000 patients. He founded the Colorado Longevity Institute in Beaver Creek, Colorado, which specialized in preventive mind-body medicine. David’s career in emergency medicine ended as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident, and his personal healing process led him to explore a number of alternative therapies and healers. His healing journey led him to enroll at the University of Santa Monica (USM), where he was named “Student of the Year” upon graduating with a master’s degree in Spiritual Psychology. After earning a postgraduate certificate in Consciousness, Health and Healing from USM, he completed a Ph.D. in psychology with an emphasis in Integrative Health Studies at Saybrook University.
David is currently faculty at the University of Santa Monica in the master’s degree program in spiritual psychology and also their postgraduate program in Consciousness, Health and Healing. He is a member of the Advisory Board for the College of Mind-Body Medicine at Saybrook University. Some of his other academic honors include membership in Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) medical honor society, and recipient of the William D. Bodine research award from Jefferson Medical College.
David also is Co-Director of the Freedom to Choose Foundation, along with his very gifted wife, Bonnie Paul, Ph.D. They co-facilitate workshops teaching the principles and practices of Spiritual Psychology to thousands of inmates at Central California Women’s Facility, and Valley State Prison (for men).
